What’s The Deal With My Beard?
Insight on why men suffer from a bumpy beard, and what could help.
Why Do Men suffer from Acne and Folliculitis in their adult years?
Men have a simplistic approach to how they apply products. Most want a 3 step system to keep their routine moving. Many skin care systems sold to men consist of a Cleanser, Toner/Toner pad, Moisturizer/ SPF. Many men miss the mark by not using an exfoliant or exfoliating sponge 1-2 times a week. A lot of men don’t have the correct education on skin health and what contributes to acne, and folliculitis of the beard area.
Speaking of Beards, when males develop beards, they no longer have access to cleansing, and exfoliating that area thoroughly.
For Black males and POC who have thicker hair textures, oftentimes the skin in the beard area can become thick. The moment you get a haircut your skin becomes exposed, and it screams. This is where pseudofolliculitis barbae happens. Small red, or skin colored bumps appear by themselves or in thick clusters on the face. Normally, a barber will wipe the face after a trim with alcohol to avoid infection. While this may kill bacteria on the face at the moment, what happens moments after a haircut will determine how your face will react to the hair growing back.
Men have such a hard time with getting rid of a bumpy beard because they don’t realize a lot of their hair is trapped in their skin due to not exfoliating their thick skin off. Fellas, pay attention to the bumps on your beard. Do they have flaky skin under it? Can you see the hair trapped in the skin? Many times men suffer from Folliculitis. An ingrown hair that has become inflamed or blistered. Many of them leak pus and then dry up. Creating an even harder barrier for the hairs to come out. A lot of times men can suffer from sensitivity and bleeding on the beard as well. Honestly for some it can be embarrassing and can cause insecurities. What man wouldn’t want to be confident with a clear and attractive face.
As a future Esthetician, I have been in school studying different facial protocols that can repair men’s facial barriers. Men who are smokers, work in outside environments, drive trucks, factory workers and athletes all deal with clogged pores and congested skin. For the everyday business man it is important to keep your face presentable by you and your peers' standards. What do people see when they look at you? A clear face, bright smile, and great hygiene is what they should see! At my school; NC Nails & Esthetics Academy provides facial devices and education on how to use them. Oftentimes men don’t know that there are facials and regimens that they can add on to their daily routines. Also, men deal with Aging just like women. Exposure to the sun, not cleansing and moisturizing your facial skin can cause your skin to lose elasticity and droop. And you don’t want that!
